Smithsonian Institute
Overview
The Smithsonian Institute is an research institution and museum complex administered by the United States government. The institution recieves funding from the U. S. government as well as its endowment, contributions, and profits from the institution's shops and magazine. Most of the organization's facilities are located on the National Mall Washington, D.C., but its 19 museums, zoo, and 9 research centers include sites in New York City, Virginia, Panama, and elsewhere. The institution boasts over 142 million items in its collections. Some its most popular museums include the National Air & Space Museum and the Natural History Museum.
